Definition:

From Wikipedia:

A cement is a binder, a substance used for construction that sets, hardens, and adheres to other materials to bind them together. Cement is seldom used on its own, but rather to bind sand and gravel (aggregate) together.

Other Definition:
Cement is defined in many ways as follows,

  • A powdery substance made by calcining lime and clay, mixed with water to form mortar or mixed with sand, gravel, and water to make concrete.
  • Cement, any material that hardens and becomes strongly adhesive after application.

History:

In 1824, Joseph Aspdin (A British engineer). uncovered a brand-new building material product. He named it. “Portland cement”. Who obtained the patent for Portland cement on 21 October 1824.

At present cement is an essential building product. Limestone (calcium carbonate ), silica, alumina. and iron oxide (from clay) are the four standards.
components required for making concrete.

Uses & Application:

Difference Between 43 grade and 53 grade?

53 Grade OPC cement is Used in RCC and pre-stressed concrete of higher grades, cement grouts, instant plugging mortars etc. where initial higher strength is the criteria. 43 Grade OPC Cement are commonly used for plastering works, Non-RCC structures, pathways etc where initial setting time is not of importance.

What is 33 grade? 43 or 53 grade Cement? What number denotes?

OPC has 3 grades that are 33-grade, 43-grade, 53-grade.

Based on the Bureau of Indian Standard, these grades are set apart by their compressive strengths and these strengths are shared in megapascal (Mpa) that is N/mm2. Compressive strength is a proportion of tons per unit area.

Ex: 43 grade strength is 43 N/mm2or 43 MPa.

The strength is determined by the following process mentioned in the I.S Code.

  • Compressive Strength
  • Consistency of Standard Cement Paste

OPC 53 Grade Cement Vs OPC 43 Grade Cement Vs PPC Vs PSC:

53 Grade OPC cement:

It is higher grade ordinary portland cement that is made use of in Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) work, building and construction of
multistory buildings, pre-cast as well as pre-stressed concrete, bridges, high frameworks, roads and so on.

53 grade OPC creates extremely rapid strength and also accelerate the construction work. As per the IS 12269-1987, 3 and 7 days of compressive strength of 53 grade OPC is 27 N/mm2 as well as 37 N/mm2 respectively.

OPC 43 cement:

OPC 43 cement shall conform to IS:8112-1989 and the designed strength of 28 days shall be minimum 43 MPa

OPC (43 Grade) can be used in all kind of Concrete constructions – such as RCC, precast concrete and prestressed concrete, Slip form constructions, all kinds of Masonry works, manufacture of cement based products such as pipes, tiles, blocks etc
